Jason wanted to wake up his 05 F150 5.4L 3v so I had him install exhaust, intake, and then he brought it to me for an SCT X2 and Dynotune. This truck still had stock tires and stock 3.73 gears.
With the factory tune these trucks do not go open loop (power enrichment) until you have been at WOT (floored) for 7-8 seconds. Still running in closed loop at WOT means you are giving up a ton of power and throttle response. When they finally do go open loop they run very rich. On his truck we picked up a ton of power by smoothing out the a/f and adjusting the spark curve. This was all done on 87 octane. The 5.4L 3v actually responds very well to the cheap stuff.
Staying closed loop does help gas mileage while towing, but I can make a special tune to give you the best of both worlds.
